The Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Nyombi Thembo has underscored the role that Artificial Intelligence(AI) can play  in transforming the country’s economy.

Speaking during an AI consultative stakeholder workshop organized by the National AI taskforce at Silver Springs Hotel, Kampala, Thembo said it is high time Uganda leveraged AI in all sectors.

“By leveraging AI, we can revolutionize sectors like healthcare, agriculture and education, ensuring that no one is left behind in this digital era. Imagine AI-powered precision farming, enabling our farmers to predict weather patterns and maximize yields, or AI-driven personalized learning platforms transforming the education experience for our children. These are not distant dreams. They are achievable realities within our grasp, if we work collectively to build the necessary frameworks and partnerships,” Thembo said.

The UCC Executive Director said AI is not just a technological milestone but also  a force reshaping industries, societies, and economies globally.

“Together, we have the opportunity to define how this transformative potential can uplift every Ugandan.”

Thembo however said the promise of AI is not automatic but  demands on vision, preparation, and collaboration.

He said Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) envisions a future where AI is seamlessly integrated into the country’s digital transformation roadmap, fostering an ecosystem of innovation, inclusivity, and ethical progress.

“Through the digital transformation roadmap, we aim to build a digital economy that is inclusive, secure, and innovative. AI plays a crucial role in this vision, and today’s discussions will help us identify the paths and partnerships needed to make this a reality.”

He however said realizing the full potential of AI for Uganda requires unwavering collaboration.

“Government bodies, academia, private sector players, and civil society must come together to form a robust AI ecosystem. Together, we can design solutions that not only address our unique challenges but also position Uganda as a leader in Africa's AI narrative.”

“Let us innovate responsibly, prioritise equity, and champion sustainability.”
