Dokolo braces for by-election amidst speculation

DOKOLO | As Dokolo District prepares for a crucial by-election to fill the position of District Woman Member of Parliament, attention shifts to the pressing issues that will shape voter decisions.

From infrastructure deficiencies to healthcare access and education quality, local concerns are taking centre-stage, fueling speculation and anticipation among voters and local leaders alike.

The seat fell vacant when Cecilia Ogwal passed away last month.

Julius Peter Okello Awany, the FDC chairperson for Dokolo, underscored the multifaceted nature of the electoral landscape, emphasising the significance of addressing pressing community needs.

"We want someone who will serve the interest of the people of Dokolo," Awany said.

Beatrice Abang Molly, the NRM xhairperson for Dokolo, acknowledges the diverse political dynamics at play, highlighting the importance of engaging with voters on critical issues.

Meanwhile, aspirants from various political parties, including Rosemary Alwoch Ogwal of FDC, Sarah Nyangkori Aguti of UPC, and Dr Lalam Anna Grace, an independent candidate, vie for voter support, pledging to address local challenges and champion community interests.

Geoffrey Ogweng, a resident of Amwoma Sub-county, emphasizes the need for candidates who prioritize the welfare of the constituents over political rhetoric.

"With different political parties participating in the by-election, the voters will focus on a candidate who will address local issues," Ogweng explained.

However, Rashid Eton, the LC3 chairperson for Bata Town Council, cautions against resorting to personal attacks in the electoral process, emphasising the importance of maintaining civility and constructive discourse.

As the race intensifies, aspirants are engaging in grassroots mobilisation and crafting compelling messages to win over voters.

With the nomination of candidates scheduled for March 11, all eyes are on the upcoming campaign period, which promises to be a pivotal moment in determining the future direction of Dokolo District.
