Before its accreditation, Kiyagara Health Centre III was limited to conducting HIV testing but lacked the authority to administer ARVs. Now, with this upgrade, patients can receive comprehensive care within their community.

HIV-positive individuals in Kahunge Sub County, Kamwenge District, have a reason to rejoice following the accreditation of Kiyagara Health Centre III to provide antiretroviral (ARV) treatment.

This significant milestone offers much-needed relief to patients who previously had to travel long distances, often compromising their privacy, to access life-saving medication.

Before its accreditation, Kiyagara Health Centre III was limited to conducting HIV testing but lacked the authority to administer ARVs. Now, with this upgrade, patients can receive comprehensive care within their community.

“This accreditation is a huge relief for our patients,” said Dorah Ampa, the in-charge of Kiyagara Health Centre III.

“Many of them had to travel to Rukunyu Hospital for ARVs, which created logistical challenges and affected their confidentiality. Now, they can access the care they need closer to home.”

Kamwenge District Health Officer (DHO) William Mucunguzi highlighted the significance of this development, noting the strenuous efforts involved in securing the accreditation.

“The process was challenging, but it was essential to ensure that our people have access to treatment nearby. This step will ease the burden on patients and improve their overall well-being,” he said.

Mucunguzi also revealed that other health facilities in the district have recently been accredited to provide HIV treatment, including Bihanga Health Centre III, Kabingo, Rukurura, and Rwenzori Mission Health Centre.

He described the accreditations as part of a broader strategy to improve healthcare delivery and ensure equitable access to essential services.

“These accreditations are a testament to our commitment to enhancing healthcare services and ensuring no one is left behind,” Mucunguzi added.

For HIV-positive persons in Kahunge Sub County, the accreditation of Kiyagara Health Centre III brings renewed hope and dignity.

The development underscores the relentless efforts of healthcare workers and local authorities to prioritize the needs of vulnerable populations and build a brighter future for all.
