Journalist clean Kabale town
Journalists were joined by police and other stakeholders during the cleaning exercise

Journalists in Kabale District on Thursday temporarily changed the pen and notebood with brooms as they took to cleaning the town ahead of the World Press Freedom Day.

Joined by Kabale Police, alongside political leaders, business owners, and community members from institutions like Kabale University and Uganda Christian University - Bishop Barham University College, they commenced cleaning the streets at 10am.

Their cleaning journey started from Highland Business Center along Kabale-Kisoro Road, traversed through Kabale Owino Market, Old Garage Street, Kabale Police station, Kabale Central Market, Kabale roundabout, Kabale-Mbarara Highway, and concluded at Agaba Center in Kigongi, Central Division of Kabale Municipality.

The chairperson of the World Press Freedom Day Organizing Committee, Job Namanya, lauded the Kabale journalists for their commitment to keeping the town clean and emphasized the significance of celebrating the day district-wide to foster journalist collaboration and initiate income-generating projects.

Namanya expressed gratitude to stakeholders such as the police for their support in making the event successful.

ASP Elly Maate, the Kigeze Region Police spokesperson, stressed the importance of stakeholder unity for societal peace and commended the journalists' efforts.

He assured the community of the security administration's readiness to maintain peace during the celebrations.

"As police we found it important to join journalists in cleaning as they celebrate their day," Mr Maate said.

Sam Arinaitwe, chairman central division, commended the journalists for their professionalism they have showed. He called upon journalists to follow the theme in steering to protect the environment.

The festivities are scheduled for today at Kabale Municipal Stadium, with over 1,000 attendees expected.

The Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babalanda, is expected to grace the occasion as the chief guest, accompanied by ministers and Members of Parliament from the Kigezi Region.
