38 rescued as UPDF destroys enemy group in Eastern Congo
The UPDF and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) in a joint operation code-named "Operation Shujaa have rescued 38 abductees from an enemy group in the east of the Ibiena River in the DRC.
According to the statement by the UPDF spokesperson, Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye, the rescue happened on Monday during an intelligence-led operation against the enemy group

He noted that during the operation, significant number of casualties was registered while others members of the enemy group were forced to surrender.
"The operation resulted in significant casualties and demoralization for the enemy, who were also forced to surrender eight SMGs and one PK machine gun," Kulayigye stated.
He added, "Additionally, 38 abductees including women and children born in captivity were freed by the combined forces."
He commended the joint forces for the successful operation.
"As we pursue the ADF terrorists, we congratulate our generals, officers, and men who participated in Operation Shujja and wish the combined forces many more successes in the defence of our territorial integrity."
The development comes weeks after the joint forces rescued five women and five children from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorist group in the Eastern DRC.
The UPDF has been on the hot pursuit of the ADF rebels since December 2021 when artillery and air strikes were launched against the group’s bases in the thick eastern DRC forces.
The operation followed terror attacks in Kampala that left scores dead.
