Residents of Kyaruhanga Ward in Kagongo Division, Ibanda Municipality, have expressed growing concern over a surge in housebreaks and robberies as the Christmas season approaches.

For months, thieves have reportedly targeted homes and stolen livestock in Kyereeta, Kitwe, and Rwamabaare cells, leaving residents in fear.
The criminals, often armed with machetes, have created a climate of insecurity and disrupted the community’s peace.
“We are living in fear because thieves strike at night, and no one feels safe anymore,” said Stephen Tumwine, the LC1 Chairperson of Kyaruhanga Ward, during the meeting.
Residents accused the police of inefficiency, alleging that suspects are frequently released after being arrested. “It’s frustrating to see suspects walk free after being apprehended. This only encourages more crime,” a concerned resident said during the meeting.
The situation has prompted repeated calls for stricter measures and a more proactive approach from security agencies in Ibanda.
Presiding over the meeting, Duncan Kansiime, Officer in Charge of Ibanda Central Police Station, acknowledged the residents’ concerns and outlined steps to address the issue.
“We are urging all LC1 chairpersons to register every resident in their areas to help us identify criminals more easily,” Kansiime stated. He also emphasised the need for cooperation between the police and community leaders to strengthen local security.
The meeting highlighted the importance of vigilance among residents and the need for collective efforts to combat crime. “We must work together as a community to protect ourselves and report suspicious activities promptly,” Tumwine urged. He also called on residents to form neighbourhood watch groups to enhance surveillance.
Stakeholders at the meeting emphasised that addressing the root causes of crime, such as unemployment and youth idleness, is critical.
They appealed to local authorities to implement programs that empower young people and reduce their involvement in criminal activities.
As the festive season draws closer, residents hope for swift action from the police to restore safety and confidence in the area.
“We need a secure environment to celebrate Christmas with our families,” said a resident from Kyereeta Cell.
The security meeting concluded with resolutions to intensify patrols, improve community-police relations, and hold regular engagements to monitor progress.
Residents remain hopeful that these measures will bring an end to the wave of crime in Kyaruhanga Ward.
