The survivors face dire conditions, with inadequate shelter, food, water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities compounding their suffering.
In response to the crisis, Caritas Tororo, a Christian humanitarian organization, has launched a Shs.100 million emergency relief effort.
The organization has provided cash assistance to 100 vulnerable households, enabling them to purchase essential items to sustain them for at least a month.
Each household received mobile money transfers, with the smallest amount disbursed being Shs.350,000.
“This intervention aims to give families a chance to rebuild their lives after losing everything,” said Irene Namanda, a project officer at Caritas Tororo.
Ramadhan Twaha, the focal point for emergency response in Bulambuli District, expressed gratitude for Caritas Tororo’s timely intervention but underscored the need for additional support.
“The community urgently needs both material and emotional assistance to navigate this difficult period,” Twaha noted.
Pius Okumu, Parish Priest of Tunyi, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for psychological support to help families recover from the trauma of the disaster.
The landslide affected 230 households, resulting in significant displacement and the tragic loss of lives.
Over 100 people are believed to have been buried by the landslide, with recovery efforts uncovering 36 bodies so far.
Weeks after the disaster, families are still searching for missing loved ones, while others grapple with the immense loss and devastation.
The intervention by Caritas Tororo has provided a glimmer of hope for the affected communities, but the challenges remain vast.
Local leaders and residents are calling on other organizations and well-wishers to join efforts in addressing the immediate needs of survivors and supporting long-term recovery initiatives.
As Bulambuli District continues to respond to the aftermath of the disaster, the priority remains on providing essential aid, facilitating relocation, and ensuring the emotional and psychological well-being of the survivors.
