UPC's Akena Wants All Party Members to Elect President

Uganda People's Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Akena has unveiled plans to amend the party's constitution in a bid to consolidate and strengthen its leadership.

Speaking at the UPC headquarters, Akena emphasized that the proposed amendments aim to make the election of the party president more inclusive and democratic.

“I shall propose to the next delegates’ conference to amend the UPC party constitution such that the UPC president shall be elected by all members of the party,” said Akena.

Under the current constitution, the party president is elected by district councils, with candidates required to secure victories in at least one-third of districts nationwide.

Akena’s proposal seeks to shift this process, allowing all party members to directly participate in electing their leader.

“This great idea is being brought with an understanding that all members should participate in electing their leader,” Akena stated.

He expressed confidence that the proposed changes would strengthen the party's grassroots support ahead of the 2026 elections. “I believe this will help consolidate and strengthen our grassroots ahead of the 2026 elections,” he added.

The proposed amendments will be presented at the party’s next Delegates’ Conference, scheduled for next year.

Akena also used the occasion to address critics of his leadership, asserting that he has surpassed the achievements of his predecessors.

The proposed constitutional changes are expected to ignite significant debate within the party, especially among those who have previously raised concerns about Akena’s leadership style and the direction of the UPC.
