Lawyers for Besigye Scuffle with Military Police at Court Martial Gate
Dr Besigye alights the Prisons van at Makindye court premises on arrival for his bail hearing

Dr Kizza Besigye and his associate Obeid Lutale spent the festive weekend on remand in Luzira Prison

Lawyers representing Dr Kizza Besigye have been involved in a heated altercation with military police at the gate of the Court Martial, following delays in gaining entry to the premises.

The incident unfolded when the lawyers questioned the authority of the soldiers denying them access and proceeded to shake the gate in an attempt to force it open.

In response, the commander ordered military police to push the lawyers away.

Security at the Court Martial has been significantly heightened, with the presence of more personnel than usual for Besigye's court sessions.

Additionally, there has been a noticeable change in the security detail guarding the premises, with new faces replacing those seen in the previous two sessions.

Supporters of the People's Front for Freedom, a political group supporting opposition stalwart Besigye, have also been denied access to the court.

Only known leaders and former legislators have been allowed entry, and they are now waiting near the Makindye Magistrates' Court.

The situation escalated when these supporters used a stick to draw a line in the road, daring the military to cross it, creating an intense standoff.

Despite the court being scheduled to begin at 10am, lawyers are still undergoing clearance at the gate, with no proceedings having started yet.

The case, which is set for a ruling, involves an objection raised by Besigye's legal team regarding the trial of civilians in the Court Martial and its jurisdiction, among other issues presented by Hajj Obed Lutale and Dr Besigye's legal representatives.
