According to the chief executive officer Inspire Africa Coffee Group, Nelson Tugume, the marathon idea originates from his mother’s guidance and experiences.
“I drew the inspiration of the marathon starting from the theme right from my mother who told me and I thought my mother represents many women,"Tugume said.
The policy adviser at the Inspire Africa Coffee Duncan Abigaba highlighted the level at which rural women have continuously struggled to get out of poverty and thus the theme of the Marathon.
“We are looking at raising about shs2 billion from the marathon and this money will help boost their contribution to the agricultural production and value chain but the money ends up in the pockets of men,” Abigaba said.
“Therefore we are looking at for example supporting women groups with the money from the Marathon making it easier to access credit from their village groups” He added.
The Archbishop of the church of Uganda Dr. Samuel Stephen Kazimba Mugalu while on a visit tour at the Inspire Africa Coffee factory, expressed gratitude for the marathon challenging people to be part of it.
“I have been impressed by what Tugume and his team are doing at these hills. I am confident that this will be a successful Marathon, please let everyone that can make it embrace the Marathon” Kazimba said.
Speaking on behalf of the State minister of sports in the ministry of education, Peter Ogwang, the assistant commissioner Sports Samuel Odong pledged total support for the marathon.
“Government will continue to support you and we will fully be part of the marathon, since it intends to be an annual event we should also look at having the marathon to even other regions and as the government, we will do anything humanly possible” Odongo said.
The Coffee Marathon is targeting an international audience of about 5000 people and a total of 100,000 participants.
Distances to be covered include 5km, 10km, 21km, and 40km and will be crowned with a coffee festival.
