Amudat Suspect Arrested, Illegal Gun Recovered

A coordinated security operation in Amudat District has led to the arrest of a suspect and the recovery of an illegal firearm.
Natinyang Ngorok, a resident of Achubakin Village in Namusing Parish, Loroo Sub County, was arrested and detained on January 19 during a cordon and search operation conducted by joint security forces.
Karamoja Police Spokesperson Mike Longole confirmed the operation’s success, revealing that a Sub-Machine Gun (SMG) with registration number KP 769714 and two rounds of ammunition were recovered.
“This recovery was made possible through intelligence-led operations,” Longole said. “It’s part of our ongoing efforts to disarm communities and restore peace in Karamoja.”
Authorities noted that the suspect had been asked to surrender the firearm voluntarily last year, but his family denied any knowledge of the weapon.
Illegal guns have long been a source of instability in Karamoja, fueling cattle raids, violent conflicts, and hindering development. The region has been plagued by decades of insecurity, with small arms contributing to countless deaths and displacements.
“The possession of illegal firearms is one of the major drivers of insecurity in Karamoja. These operations are critical to ending the cycle of violence,” Longole added.
Residents and leaders in Karamoja have applauded the security forces for their relentless efforts.
“We need more of these operations to get rid of illegal weapons and give our communities a chance to rebuild,” said Micah Lolem, the area member of Parliament.
The suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue. Security forces have urged anyone in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them voluntarily, warning that failure to do so could result in severe legal consequences.
