The Democratic Party (DP) has expressed its readiness to question Mathias Mpuuga on key political matters during an anticipated meeting. Mpuuga, the Leader of Democratic Alliance, has sought to meet with DP leaders to discuss electoral reforms among other issues ahead of forthcoming elections.

Mpuuga has recently engaged with other political parties, including JEEMA and the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). He also wrote to DP, requesting a meeting.

DP Secretary-General Gerald Siranda revealed that the party will find time and meet Mpuuga and his allies and has lined up critical questions for Mpuuga, especially regarding his political moves since leaving DP to join the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Siranda revealed this in a press briefing at the party headquarters in Mengo.

Siranda added that DP remains open to forging alliances, highlighting their previous collaborations. He noted that Mpuuga’s role in the Democratic Alliance (DA), a coalition he and others formed after leaving DP, will be a focal point of discussion.

Mathias Mpuuga, once a prominent DP member, left the party to join NUP, where he has since become a key political figure.

However, his recent political moves, including forming new alliances and seeking to engage with his former party, have sparked curiosity and debate within Uganda’s political landscape.

Relatedly, In preparation for the 2026 general elections, DP has shifted its focus to strengthening grassroots leadership. Siranda emphasised the party’s renewed strategy to prioritise local-level positions such as district chairpersons, sub-county leaders, and Members of Parliament, noting past shortcomings in this area.

During a press briefing, Siranda outlined DP’s activities for the year, including plans for the party's National Council meeting.

Key issues on the agenda include leadership development and political strategies for the 2025/2026-election cycle.

The DP Secretary-General acknowledged the party’s challenges but reaffirmed its commitment to revitalisation.

“We are meeting our leaders to strategise on ways to lift the party out of its current struggles and ensure it is ready for future political contests,” Siranda said.

The Democratic Party’s renewed focus on grassroots leadership and alliances could position it as a formidable player in Uganda’s evolving political arena as the 2026 elections approach.
