Samuel Walter Lubega Mukaaku has cemented his place in Ugandan politics as a controversial yet dynamic figure, eliciting both admiration and criticism.
Known for his shifting political affiliations, Mukaaku positions himself as a crusader for truth and justice, steadfastly committed to ushering in what he calls a "new Uganda."
Mukaaku's political journey began within the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD), the youth wing of the Democratic Party (DP), which he credits as his political foundation.
“The UYD made me a dedicated member of the DP, and I still hold my party membership card to this day,” he affirms.
Yet, despite his proclaimed loyalty to the DP, Mukaaku has frequently sought office as an independent candidate, including bids for Member of Parliament and the presidency—efforts that have yet to yield electoral success.
Throughout his career, Mukaaku has participated in multiple political alliances, including the DP Bloc, People Power Movement, Holy Alliance, and activism initiatives alongside Dr Kizza Besigye.
For Mukaaku, these affiliations serve a singular purpose.
“I join alliances to connect with groups that advocate for change,” he explains. “I leave when I notice any deviation from the cause.”
His latest venture is the Democratic Alliance, which he describes as an inclusive and promising platform.
“This alliance stands out because it allows everyone an equal platform to be heard. I see it as the reconstructed People Power Movement with a clearer focus,” he remarked.
Praise and Criticism
Mukaaku's fluid allegiances have sparked mixed reactions. Dr. Rogers Barigayomwe, a political commentator, acknowledges Mukaaku’s mobilization skills but warns of his unpredictability.
“Mukaaku is a good mobilizer and has achieved significant progress in some initiatives, but his commitment tends to fade as he shifts to other things,” Barigayomwe observed.
His actions have also led to accusations of betrayal, particularly within the DP Bloc, where members alleged he compromised the alliance's integrity, leading to his suspension.
Mukaaku denies these allegations, maintaining that his decisions are guided by principle and a steadfast vision for Uganda’s future.
Mukaaku’s career exemplifies the challenges of navigating Uganda’s volatile political landscape, where alliances are formed, tested, and often broken.
Despite the controversy surrounding his approach, he remains a figure to watch—both for his potential to influence change and for the debates his actions provoke.
