Another Jolly for NUP in Western Uganda
Jackline Jolly Tukamushaba

Born in Kigara B Cell, Kamwezi Sub-county, Rukiga District, Tukamushaba brings a solid academic background to her new role.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has struggled to make its presence felt in swathes of western Uganda as well as the southwestern Uganda. Yet not all is lost.

The opposition party has made a bold move to bolster its presence in western Uganda by appointing Jackline Jolly Tukamushaba as the new Vice President for the region.

Jolly Tukamushaba succeeds the late Jolly Mugisha, a prominent social worker and politician whose untimely passing left a significant void in the party's leadership.

The appointment marks a pivotal moment for NUP as it seeks to gain traction in a region predominantly dominated by the National Resistance Movement (NRM), especially with the 2026 general elections approaching. Tukamushaba’s leadership is expected to rejuvenate the party's efforts in a region where its visibility has been limited.

Born in Kigara B Cell, Kamwezi Sub-county, Rukiga District, Tukamushaba brings a solid academic background to her new role.

She attended Kamwezi Primary School from 1982 to 1989, then St Theresa Secondary School in Bwanda, Masaka (now Kalungu District), completing her studies in 1995.

She later earned qualifications in business education from National Teachers College Kabale and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Makerere University.

The 49-year-old accountant is married with two children. Despite her lack of extensive political experience, Tukamushaba believes her leadership roles during her school years have prepared her for the task ahead.

“I have not been deeply involved in politics, but I held leadership positions at school. In secondary school, I was the prefect in charge of education, and at NTC Kabale, I served as the minister in charge of women affairs,” Tukamushaba shared during an interview with Nile Post.

Tukamushaba attributed her entry into politics to the inspiration she drew from NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, whose message of hope for the underprivileged resonated deeply with her.

“My life has been full of challenges, and when my party president came into the limelight advocating for the less privileged, I felt this was someone I could work with to change Uganda for the better,” she said.

Tukamushaba expressed her readiness to take on the responsibility of leading NUP’s efforts in western Uganda, a region she hopes to steer towards embracing the party’s ideology.

“I am very comfortable and convinced that I am ready to carry the mantle. There is a tendency in the west to think NUP is for a certain tribe, but I am here to clarify that NUP is a national party representing all Ugandans,” she said.

She emphasized that her mission is to debunk stereotypes about NUP, promote inclusivity, and rally support for the party ahead of the 2026 elections.

Tukamushaba also announced her intention to run for the Rukiga Woman MP seat in 2026 on the NUP ticket.

“As the new Vice President for Western Uganda, I am determined to strengthen NUP’s presence in the region and work closely with party members to achieve our goals,” she declared.

NUP leaders have expressed confidence in Tukamushaba’s ability to carry forward the legacy of the late Jolly Mugisha, while also bringing fresh perspectives and energy to the party’s efforts in western Uganda.

Her appointment is seen as a critical step in preparing for the upcoming elections and expanding the party’s reach.
