The national coordinator of the Democratic Alliance, Mathias Mpuuga, has cautioned voters, particularly those from the Buganda region, to exercise their voting rights wisely in the upcoming 2026 elections.

Mpuuga emphasized the importance of selecting leaders who can amplify the voices of the people in Buganda, rather than those who remain silent after assuming leadership positions.

"I sympathise with the voters of Makindye East for electing an MP who cannot voice a single word on the floor of Parliament," Mpuuga said,

Makindye East is represented by Mr Derrick Nyeko, who was recently one of the most vocal in pushing back against Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba's threats to arrest MPs.

Gen Muhoozi had called MPs "fools" and "clowns" leading to his summons by the Defence and International Affairs Committee.

It is not yet clear how Mpuuga arrived at the conclusion that Mr Nyeko does not speak as the National Unity Platform  legislator has also previously spoken during the prosecution of MPs for corruption last year.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony of William Mabikke, son of former Makindye East legislator Michael Mabikke, Mr Mpuuga said it was time they got back in.

"I appeal to the former legislator, Michael Mabikke, to rise up and bridge the gap in the coming election, so that the voice of Makindye voters can be heard again," he said.

Mabikke, a former Democratic Party youth winger, was defeated by Nyeko in the 2021 polls.

Mpuuga noted that the people of Uganda, especially in Buganda, need effective leadership and representation, which many legislators elected in 2021 have failed to provide.

He assured voters that he and other like-minded leaders will offer guidance on choosing the right leaders to support.

Mpuuga also urged the graduate, William Mabikke, to become a responsible individual as he embarks on his new journey in life.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including leaders of the Democratic Alliance like Dr. Abed Bwanika, current and former members of parliament, and other notable figures.
