In a groundbreaking achievement for artificial intelligence, Felix Kitaka a Ugandan software developer and consultant, also known as Mutambuze, has unveiled LugandaGPT, a voice assistant capable of conversing in Luganda, one of Uganda's most widely spoken languages.

This innovation is in all right, a significant milestone, not only for Uganda but also for global AI, as it bridges linguistic gaps in the digital space and highlights the potential of technology to preserve and promote cultural heritage.

Felix Kitaka embarked on this particular AI journey in December 2024, inspired by the release of ChatGPT.

Recognising the transformative power of artificial intelligence, Kitaka immersed himself in foundational learning to understand its capabilities.

His efforts culminated in the development of LugandaGPT under Audersity Studios, his company whose mission is to be the gateway to the new world.

In a tweet shared on January 17, 2025, Kitaka said: "Experience is the best teacher, so I learned by building LugandaGPT, the first Luganda voice assistant. If any other one exists, I have neither seen nor heard of it. I hope my demo inspires you."

LugandaGPT addresses a critical gap in localised technology by providing a tool that understands and responds in Luganda.

For a language as widely spoken and culturally significant as Luganda, its absence in the digital landscape has long been a barrier to inclusivity.

This voice assistant not only democratizes access to technology for Luganda speakers but also sets a global precedent for AI solutions tailored to native languages.

Kitaka’s wife, Rukh-Shana Kitaka expressed her pride in his achievement, responding to his announcement: "To say I’m proud of what you’ve accomplished so far with LugandaGPT is an understatement.

The curiosity, late nights, and early mornings buried in study are paying off. I’m confident you have not even scratched the surface of the vision you carry. Here’s to the future!"

Felix Kitaka’s innovation has further been met with widespread enthusiasm and praise from the public. Many replies to his announcement comprised of users commending his efforts and dedication and celebrating the breakthrough as a major step forward for Uganda’s tech ecosystem.

The future prospects for LugandaGPT are indeed immense. Its applications could potentially extend to education, healthcare, and government services, making it a transformative tool for societal development.

Felix Kitaka’s LugandaGPT is not just a technological breakthrough; it is a symbol of what is possible when curiosity, passion, and dedication converge.

As Uganda and the world move toward a more inclusive technological future, LugandaGPT stands as a shining example of how AI can celebrate and preserve the diverse tapestry of human language and culture.
