I've concrete evidence NUP rigged 2021 polls - Museveni
President Museveni has since 2021 polls claimed that his nearest challenger Robert Kyagulanyi turned the tables on rigging machinations
MUNYONYO | President Museveni has made fresh allegations against the National Unity Platform (NUP), claiming that the opposition party rigged the 2021 general elections by one million votes.
Speaking during a Thanksgiving service for the late General Aronda Nyakairima, Mr Museveni said he has concrete evidence to support his claim and challenged NUP to confront him if they believe he is making false accusations.
Former Chief of Defence Forces Gen Aronda was the internal affairs minister when he suddenly passed away while on a flight back home from a foreign trip on September 12, 2015.
The President explained that the alleged vote rigging was facilitated by electoral agents at polling stations who failed to properly oversee the election process.
He acknowledged that election cheating is a widespread issue in Uganda’s political landscape, with some politicians embracing fraudulent tactics to gain power.
According to Museveni, the only way to eliminate electoral malpractices is through the introduction of electronic voting systems.
He proposed that elections at any polling station where electronic voting machines malfunction should be suspended until the issue is resolved.
The President also reflected on Uganda’s troubled electoral history, highlighting that the country’s election problems date back to the 1960s when the Uganda People's Congress was at the center of alleged election rigging.
Museveni stressed that biometric verification through fingerprint identification is essential to ensuring free and fair elections, as no two individuals have identical fingerprints.
Mr Museveni believes this method would prevent voter impersonation and guarantee the integrity of the electoral process.
This is a developing story...
