UBOS launches this year’s Africa Statistics Week

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has launched the Africa Statistics Week at Statistics House in Kampala
The statistics week is an annual event that is celebrated to raise public awareness of the importance of statistics in all aspects of social and economic life.

This year’s week under the theme “Supporting education by modernizing production of fit for purpose statistics” will be marked by a series of events comes ahead of the African Statistics Day, on 18 November.
UBOS spokesperson, Didacus Okoth said during the week they will hold several interactions with various stakeholders in regards disseminating statistics.
“At UBOS, we found it important that to continuously leverage on the practice and application of data in our day-to-day operations, it is critical that we bring together various stakeholders, which we cant do one day. It is why the bureau celebrates the entire week,” Okoth said.
Okoth said this year’s focus of the statistics week is on the education sector and how data is critical in generating development policies which are critical in enhancing education sector.
He said on Monday, UBOS will have members of the education sector to get key learnings and celebrate key milestones.
Speaking during the launch of the statistics week, Prisons spokesperson, Frank Baine emphasized the role of statistics in managing crises.
He cited the 2020 case of prisoner escape in Moroto Prison that he said was overcome with the provision of the right information including statistics to the public.
Baine insisted that communicators must at all time provide all the necessary information to the public without hiding.
