Power Vacuum in Opposition Highlighted by Mike Mabikke

Former legislator and Democratic Alliance member Mike Mabikke has raised concerns over a growing power vacuum within Uganda’s opposition, emphasising the urgent need for strong, competent leadership to guide the country toward a better future.
Speaking on the state of Uganda’s politics during Frontline, a political show on NBS TV, Mabikke criticised the lack of cohesion and preparedness among opposition leaders, describing the situation as “alarming.”
“The quality of leadership today is deeply concerning,” he said. “Uganda, with or without Museveni, needs leadership. That leadership must be of high quality, and we must focus on retraining and reorienting future leaders.”
Mabikke noted that without decisive leadership, the opposition risks failing to address the pressing challenges faced by Ugandans, including human rights violations, economic injustices, and corruption.
He stressed that the power vacuum within the opposition not only weakens its ability to challenge the current regime but also undermines efforts to build a unified and democratic Uganda.
He called for urgent reforms to strengthen opposition leadership and foster national reconciliation. “It is critical to engage in a process that brings perpetrators and victims together, as has been done successfully in Kenya and South Africa,” Mabikke said.
His comments come as Uganda faces increasing demands for political reform ahead of the next electoral cycle.
