An official from EC gives final debriefing to the agents

The Electoral Commission in Mbarara City has officially commenced updating the national voters' register for the 2025/2026 general elections.

This exercise, running from January 20 to February 10, 2025, focuses on special interest groups, including youth, older persons, and persons living with disabilities.

According to Violet Atuhurira, the Returning Officer and District Election Administrator for Mbarara City, key priorities include registering new applicants, correcting errors in the register, transferring voters to different polling stations, and verifying students who registered in schools.

"The national voters' register has all voters, and the special interest groups are registers of older persons, registers of the youth, and registers of persons living with disabilities," Atuhurira noted.

Atuhurira urged residents to participate actively in the exercise to ensure they are included in the voters' register.

"We expect the community members to turn up in big numbers because it's their right to vote and their duty to ensure that they register and check whether they are still in the registers." She emphasized.

This is to help them be assured that they are in the registers and they will be able to vote for their candidates come 2026 elections.

The update process involves displaying registers at all wards in Mbarara City and equipping officers with essential materials like computers, megaphones, posters, Form EC confirmation, guidelines, Form 3, transfer booklets, Form 7, register books, and LC1 chairpersons' recommendation forms and various official forms to facilitate the process.

Despite the smooth start, minor delays were experienced due to technical challenges. By 11am, the update officers were still at the electro commission offices and at some stations the , it was 12:30pm without any update register arriving.

"We have experienced some delays, especially with the kits; some of the batteries were not working well," Atuhurira revealed.

However, the Returning Officer reassured the public that the exercise is on track and called upon eligible voters to visit the designated stations, check for their names, and make the necessary updates.
