The leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has called for the release of political prisoners, urging the public to pray for their freedom and for forgiveness towards those responsible for their detention.

Speaking during Christmas celebrations at St. Mary’s Cathedral Rubaga, led by Kampala Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere, Kyagulanyi used the occasion to highlight the plight of detainees he described as innocent victims of political oppression.

“As we celebrate Christmas, we have many of our friends who are in prison. Many have been imprisoned without any crime communicated. We have to pray for them to keep holding on, to give them patience. Let’s pray for those who imprisoned them to soften their hearts so they can release these innocent people who are rotting in prisons, so they can join their families,” he said.

The opposition leader’s comments come amid ongoing criticism of the government over alleged arbitrary arrests and detention of opposition members and activists, an issue that has drawn concern from human rights groups.

Kyagulanyi also reflected on the fading traditions and true meaning of Christmas, especially for the younger generation.

He lamented the shift in focus from spirituality to materialism and external influences.

“When we grew up, we used to listen to Philly Lutaya, who, in his songs, reminded us about the essence of the celebration. But today, the meaning of Christmas is slowly getting eroded,” he said.

He expressed dismay over modern holiday trends, singling out the influence of pop songs like Last Christmas, which he argued detract from the religious significance of the day.

“Christmas is not all about buying new clothes and going to parties but reviving ourselves and reminding ourselves of why Christ was born for us,” Bobi Wine added, urging families to prioritize the spiritual aspects of the season.

Kampala Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere, who presided over the service, also emphasized the importance of love, compassion, and unity during the festive season.
