Speaker Among Raises Concerns

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has directed the Ugandan government to prioritize security measures on alternative routes established following the closure of Karuma Bridge for repairs. The bridge, deemed past its lifespan, was closed on Monday, May 6th, 2024, for a three-month renovation project.

Security Concerns on Diverted Routes

Large vehicles, including buses and trucks, were diverted to alternative routes. Those travelling to West Nile are directed to use the Kafu-Masindi-Murchison Falls Park-Pakwach route, while Gulu-bound traffic is advised to take the Karuma-Nwoya-Kamdini route. Speaker Among emphasized the need for increased security on these detours to ensure the safety of travellers, stating, "We don't want to hear reports of robberies...let Government provide Security to prevent these wrongdoers."

New Bridge Design Inquiry

Along with security concerns, Parliamentarians, including Speaker Among, requested a government statement outlining progress on the design of a new Karuma Bridge. This request reflects the urgency of replacing the ageing structure.

Additional Bridge Concerns

Several Members of Parliament, including Paul Luttamaguzi Ssemakula (Nakaseke South) and Richard Lumu (Mityana South), raised concerns about the increasing number of bridge washouts due to heavy rains across their constituencies.
