Kazo Health Centre IV in Kazo District has received a cutting-edge colposcopy machine from the Rotary Club of Ibanda, marking a significant step forward in the fight against cervical cancer.

This advanced technology aims to enhance early detection and treatment of one of Uganda’s most prevalent cancers among women.

Aston Tumuhimbise, the acting In-Charge of Kazo Health Centre IV, expressed his appreciation for the new addition, emphasizing its potential to save lives.

“Previously, we relied on Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) and HPV testing. The colposcopy machine will greatly improve our capacity for early detection and timely treatment, reducing the number of women who succumb to this disease,” he said.

At the handover ceremony, Rotary Club of Ibanda president Eugine Bakahika urged health workers to safeguard the machine for the benefit of the community.

“This equipment belongs to the health facility now. Please ensure it is well-maintained and serves its purpose for many years,” Bakahika said.

Sr Esther Bule, acting Kazo District Health Officer, praised the donation as a transformative intervention for women’s health.

“This machine will have a tremendous impact on our mothers’ lives. We are grateful to the Rotary Club of Ibanda for prioritizing women’s health and helping us tackle cervical cancer,” she remarked.

Cervical cancer remains a pressing concern in Uganda, with an estimated 6,959 women diagnosed annually and 4,607 deaths reported each year, according to 2024 data from the HPV Information Centre.

It is the leading cancer among women aged 15 to 44, with HPV-16 and HPV-18 infections causing 57% of invasive cases.

The introduction of the colposcopy machine in Kazo is expected to revolutionize cancer care in the district.

By enabling health workers to detect pre-cancerous changes earlier, it significantly enhances the prospects for successful treatment.

This development complements existing screening methods, such as VIA and HPV testing, improving the facility’s capacity to serve its community effectively.

The donation underscores the Rotary Club of Ibanda’s commitment to addressing critical healthcare needs. By focusing on cervical cancer, the club is tackling one of the most significant threats to women’s health in Uganda.

“This intervention is a game-changer,” Tumuhimbise noted. “It empowers us to provide better care and encourages more women to seek screening and treatment.”

As Kazo Health Centre IV integrates the new technology into its services, it sets a benchmark for partnerships aimed at reducing mortality and enhancing healthcare outcomes in rural Uganda.

The machine stands as a testament to what can be achieved when communities, organizations, and healthcare providers work together to address urgent medical challen
