Parliament regional sittings: Ssenyonyi calls for focus on real issues , not tribal emotions

Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi has urged MPs from Northern Uganda to refrain from tribalizing the issue of regional Parliament, warning that it could hinder efforts to address poverty in the region.

"If indeed you are interested in fighting poverty in your region, you would back proposals to have the Shs5Bn meant for this meeting used to improve services, rather than having all that money spent on a meeting," Ssenyonyi said.

Ssenyonyi's remarks come amid heated debates over the establishment of a regional Parliament, with some MPs from Northern Uganda accusing their colleagues from other regions of trying to sabotage the initiative.

However, Ssenyonyi cautioned that tribalizing the issue would only serve to divert attention from the real challenges facing the region.

"Let us not be blinded by tribal emotions. We need to focus on finding solutions to the real problems facing our people, such as poverty, poor healthcare, and inadequate infrastructure," he said.

Ssenyonyi proposed that the Shs5 billion allocated for the meeting be redirected towards improving services in the region, such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.

"This would have a more direct impact on the lives of our people, rather than spending it on a meeting that may not yield any tangible results," he said.
