Kiteezi landfill collapse report ready -IGG

The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Beti Kamya, has announced that a comprehensive report on the recent collapse of the Kiteezi landfill will be released in the coming weeks.

The report is expected to provide a detailed examination of the causes and consequences of the collapse, as well as identify any lapses in oversight that may have contributed to the disaster.

"The Inspectorate of Government swiftly initiated an investigation into the Kiteezi issue. This matter did not emerge suddenly; it has a long history. Our report is now ready and will be issued very shortly," Kamya stated.

The investigation was ordered by President Museveni, who directed the IGG’s office to probe the causes behind the landfill's collapse.

Kamya confirmed that her deputy, Anne Twinomugisha Muhairwe, has been leading the investigation, working closely with the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

The Kiteezi landfill, a primary waste management facility in Kampala, experienced a catastrophic failure earlier this year, resulting in extensive environmental damage and posing significant health risks to surrounding communities.

The collapse has raised concerns about the effectiveness of safety protocols and regulatory measures at the site.

In response, the IGG launched an in-depth investigation to uncover the factors leading to the failure.

The upcoming report will provide insights into the structural integrity of the landfill, the effectiveness of waste management practices, and the role of relevant authorities in preventing and responding to such crises.

Preliminary findings suggest that inadequate maintenance and insufficient regulatory oversight contributed to the collapse.

The IGG's report aims to address these issues by identifying systemic weaknesses and recommending necessary reforms to prevent future incidents.

The release of this report is expected to reignite discussions on waste management and environmental safety in Uganda.
