Butaleja – Ahead of President Museveni’s scheduled three-day visit to Butaleja District, youth leaders from Bukedi sub-region are calling for accountability and transparency from their local leaders.

Frustrated by unfulfilled promises and ongoing poverty, these young leaders are urging that the region’s challenges be addressed openly during the President’s tour.

The youth leaders argue that despite previous opportunities to highlight Bukedi’s struggles, local leaders have failed to raise these issues effectively in meetings with the President.

They believe this has perpetuated poverty in the area, diminishing the impact of government interventions.

A central issue for the youth leaders is the underperformance of the Parish Development Model (PDM), a government program intended to support impoverished households.

Emmanuel Onyango, one of the leading voices, expressed dissatisfaction with the program’s progress, saying, “Significant financial resources have been invested, but the program has yet to achieve meaningful outcomes.”

Richard Omara, another youth representative, pointed to past pledges made by President Museveni to Bukedi’s youth that remain unmet.

“The President has made numerous promises, but these remain unfulfilled. We need our leaders to present our issues candidly,” he said.

In response to these concerns, Bukedi MPs, including David Ochwa of Agule County and Kevin Ojinga, the Woman MP for Pallisa, have pledged to bring these issues forward during the President’s visit.

They have committed to advocating for better management and accountability of poverty alleviation programs in the region.

President Museveni’s visit, set to begin tomorrow, is seen as an essential opportunity for the people of Bukedi to voice their grievances directly.

The visit comes as part of Museveni’s recent commitment to investigate persistent poverty across sub-regions where government-led development programs have had limited impact.

Residents and leaders alike hope the visit will spark a renewed focus on accountability, resource allocation, and effective poverty alleviation.

With President Museveni’s attention on Bukedi’s plight, there is optimism that this visit could lead to meaningful changes for the region.
