President Museveni, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairman, has urged all party leaders and supporters to play an active role in the verification and updating of voters' registers as part of preparations for 2026 General Elections.

In a letter dated January 7, 2025, addressed to members of the Central Executive Committee (CEC), National Executive Committee (NEC), Members of Parliament, and NRM leaders at all levels, Museveni stressed the importance of maintaining accurate voter records.

“The National Electoral Commission has announced the electoral roadmap for the General Elections, beginning with the Voters' Registers' verification and update. This exercise will run from January 7 to January 10, 2025,” Museveni noted.

He called on leaders to verify their names and those of their communities at polling stations to ensure inclusion in the updated registers.

Museveni also highlighted the need to remove the names of deceased individuals and add those of young people who have turned 18.

“This is the verification to confirm that your name and the names of the people you know in your area are on the register. Additionally, you should check for the names of people who died so that their names are removed, and the young people who have turned 18 should be registered,” he said.

He emphasised that a credible and updated voters' register is essential for a transparent electoral process and urged NRM leaders to mobilize communities during the three-day exercise to ensure full participation.

Museveni extended condolences for party members and other Ugandans who passed away in 2024 and wished all citizens a productive and successful 2025.

Electoral Commission Adjusts Voter Register Update Timeline

The Electoral Commission recently announced adjustments to the national voters' register update timeline. Initially set to run from January 3 to January 24, 2025, the exercise will now begin on January 20 and conclude on February 10, 2025.

Justice Simon Byabakama, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, explained the postponement, stating it was necessary to ensure all logistical and administrative preparations were complete.

“This adjustment allows us to ensure readiness at all levels and give every eligible citizen the chance to participate effectively,” Byabakama stated.

The update will occur daily, including weekends, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at designated stations across the country.

The exercise targets Ugandan citizens aged 18 and above who are not yet registered.

It will also enable voters to transfer polling stations, update their details, and facilitate registration for recently eligible voters, such as students who have turned 18.
