Ray of hope as Mpondwe bridge nears completion
Mpondwe bridge is to be reopened in March

The long-awaited completion of the Mpondwe Bridge is now projected for March this year, providing hope to residents and commuters who have faced significant challenges due to delays in construction.

Initially slated for completion in December last year, the project experienced a three-month extension attributed to unfavorable weather conditions and disruptions during the festive season.

This extension has prolonged the community's reliance on the narrow diversion route, which has caused severe congestion and frustration, particularly during rainy periods.

Speaking on the progress, site engineer Mr. Edwin Kawula reassured locals that the bridge will be ready to accommodate traffic by March. He emphasized that the construction team is working diligently to meet the revised timeline.

“The bridge was supposed to be completed last December, but delays caused by heavy rains and festive season interruptions forced us to extend the deadline. However, we are confident it will be ready by March, and it will serve the community for 50 to 100 years,” said Mr. Kawula.

State Minister for ICT and National Guidance,  Kabyanga Godfrey acknowledged the difficulties faced by residents due to the diversion, describing it as particularly problematic during rains.

He also hinted at a long-term solution, noting, “The government is planning to construct another strong bridge in a different location to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow should any issues arise with the main bridge.”

The Mpondwe Bridge, once completed, is expected to significantly improve connectivity and traffic flow in the region, alleviating the daily hardships faced by commuters and boosting economic activities.

While residents remain hopeful, they eagerly await March, a month that promises to bring an end to the congestion and a new era of efficient transportation in Mpondwe.
