Mubende clerics, led by the Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Mwerikande, together with political leaders together with  business community, have  launched commemoration games ahead of the 100-year celebrations of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, scheduled for September 20, 2025.

So far, many activities have taken place, including the planting of more than 50,000 trees across the district to promote environmental conservation.

On Fruday, the organizing committee, led by Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Mwerikande, launched both football and netball games at St. Peter's Technical College in Mubende District.

Hope Grania Nakazibwe, the Mubende Woman Member of Parliament, who represented FUFA President Engineer Moses Magogo flagged off the game

Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Mwerikande, the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Fatima, stated that the games aim to promote talent among the youth.

"We visited all the 34 sub-parishes under this parish and managed to organize 34 teams for both football and netball," Mwerikande said.

He added that the tournament is aimed at promoting talent in Mubende District while also encouraging discipline among participants.

"We want to nurture talent among our youth. With these games, many young people are kept away from engaging in bad activities. If they spend most of their time here, it is better because our tournament will last seven months before the 100-year celebrations of the parish," Mwerikande added.

Mwerikande appreciated the support of local leaders in Mubende District.

"I want to thank our Woman MP, who provided all 34 footballs and pledged to provide those for netball. I also thank the District Chairperson, Michael Ntambi, who donated a bull for the winning football team and 20 cartons of water.

MP  Nakazibwe  emphasized the need for continuous sports activities in the district, saying they help keep the youth away from bad peer influence.

"If we can have more games across the district, it will be beneficial because many young people will be engaged, leaving them with no time for negative peer groups," she said.

"I want to thank Rev. Mwerikande for such a great initiative because more talent, especially in netball, is going to be discovered. I have already seen girls showcasing their skills here," Nakazibwe added.

Michael Muhereza Ntambi, the Mubende District Chairperson, said the tournament provides an opportunity to identify talented players who could join the Buwekula Ssaza team.

"This is a great opportunity for our Ssaza team because we will be able to scout talented players from within the district. Our team has been lacking homegrown talent," Ntambi noted.

Ntambi further supported the tournament by donating a bull for the winning football team.

"We have to support our parish because it has played a significant role in the district, especially through Rev. Mwerikande, the Parish Priest. I also call upon all well-wishers to support these teams," Ntambi added.
