Rescind your decision and attend SONA - NRM tells Opposition
LoP Joel Ssenyonyi

A section of NRM legislators has asked the Opposition in Parliament to reconsider their decision and attend the State of the Nation Address (SONA) and Budget Speech slated for tomorrow and next week, respectively.

The NRM legislators says the previous boycott by the Opposition have not yielded anything hence the need to devise other means of showing their discontent.

As required by the constitution, President Museveni will on Thursday deliver SONA and present the National Budget 2024/2025 on Thursday next week at Kololo grounds.

But addressing the media on Tuesday, the Opposition in Parliament through the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, announced that they will not be attending the two events arguing that they become ritualistic and a mockery to Ugandans.

But to a section of NRM legislators boycotting the State of the Nation address and budget speech is not a solution as they will be denying themselves and their electorates an opportunity of analysing the content of the two events.

"We are here to serve Ugandans, so members of parliament from the Opposition boycotting the two constitutional events, it does not help you at all," Busongora North MP Sowed Kitanywa said

"I advise them that if they are to check the excess of the government, they need to be part of each and evert activity," added Mitooma Woman MP Juliet Agasha Bashiisha.

The NRM legislators say the previous Opposition boycotts have yielded nothing for them hence the need to devise other means of showing their discontent.

"I think this is not the first time they are opting not to attend. Last year they boycotted the two events, so I'm not sure whether they were able to achieve the intended objectives and so if they were not able to achieve much, they need to get back to the drawing board," Independent Martin Ojara Mapenduzi said.

Since the 11th Parliament started, the Opposition has been boycotting the two events with only the NRM, Independent and some few defiant Opposition MPs.
