The ongoing nationwide voter register update exercise in Jinja City has been characterised by a low turnout of eligible voters, despite extensive efforts by the Electoral Commission (EC) to mobilize residents.

The exercise, which began today January 20th 2025 , is being conducted at 28 designated update centers spread across parishes in the city.

Ms. Assey Nekesa, the Jinja City elections officer, revealed that EC officials have been stationed at various centers to facilitate the update process. "We dispatched a team to handle the voters' update exercise in different wards (parishes) across the city.

They are already on the ground, ready to receive eligible voters," she said.

The exercise is set to run until February 10, 2025, with operations ongoing daily, including weekends and public holidays, to accommodate all eligible voters.

The voter register update aims to allow eligible Ugandans to confirm their voting details, transfer their polling stations, and register newly eligible voters who have turned 18 years old.

According to Ms. Nekesa, the exercise also provides an opportunity for voters to verify and rectify any errors in their personal information on the register.

Reachel Nalubowa, an update officer stationed at Jinja Central East Ward, detailed the procedure for those wishing to transfer their voting locations.

"Those who wish to make transfers should come in person and pick their confirmation letter from the update centers. They then take it to their area LCI Chairperson for stamping and bring it back to complete the process," she explained.

Despite the critical importance of the exercise, many centers have reported low voter turnout some people have attributed the situation to a lack of awareness among some residents and the misconception that the exercise is optional.

"We encourage all eligible voters to participate. This includes those who have turned 18 years of age, those interested in changing voting locations, and anyone wishing to confirm their voting details. This exercise is crucial for ensuring accurate voter registers for the upcoming elections," Ms. Nekesa emphasised.

The EC has called upon local leaders, media outlets, and civil society organisations to step up efforts in raising awareness about the exercise.

"We are appealing to everyone to spread the word. The voter register update is a chance to ensure your name is on the list and your details are accurate. Don’t wait until it’s too late," said Ms. Nekesa.

The voter register update exercise is a pivotal part of the electoral process, ensuring that every eligible citizen can exercise their democratic right. The Electoral Commission urges all residents of Jinja City to take advantage of this opportunity before the February 10 deadline.

Eligible voters can visit any of the 28 designated update centers to register, verify their details, or transfer their voting location. The EC has assured the public of a seamless process and remains committed to facilitating free and fair elections.
