A 40-year-old woman is battling for her life at Adjumani General Hospital after sustaining severe head injuries and losing both hands when she was violently assaulted by her fiancé.
Goretti Ndirabimana, a mother of three, reportedly moved from Kisoro District and settled in Zoka Central village in Itirikwa Sub-county in Adjumani to carry out agricultural activities together with her fiancé.
Close friends disclosed that Ndirabimana has two children from her previous relationship and one child with the suspect, who on Wednesday morning inflicted the life-threatening bodily injuries on her.
Dr John Pual Andama, a medical officer attached to Adjumani General Hospital, said the victim sustained injuries from deep cuts that penetrated to the brain using a sharp object, which is mostly likely a panga.
Adjumani Deputy Resident District Commissioner Emmanuel Okware, who visited Ndirabimana on her hospital bed, has condemned the incident.
“This is a sad and regrettable incident efforts were underway to ensure that the patient was transferred to Mulago national referral hospital for specialised medical care," Okware said
North West Nile Region Police spokesperson Ignatius Dragudu identified the suspect as Tushabe Youweri, who has already been apprehended and is under police custody pending court action.
He said the incident happened after the 50-year-old suspect allegedly returned home late and drunk before the duo picked a quarrel and in the process the suspect picked a panga which he used for cutting Ndirabimana resulting to severe bodily injuries.
“The police have preferred charges of attempted murder against the suspect,” SP Dragudu said.
He urged the residents in the area to solve their grievances amicably instead of taking the law into their hands.
Adjumani RDC Peter Taban Data said efforts have been made to get in touch with the relatives of the victim who is expected to be transferred to Mulago national referral hospital for further treatment.
