UNRA launches water connection project to combat flooding in Kalungu
A UNRA machine clears the waterway to reduce flooding

Residents of Lukaya Town Council in Kalungu have found a glimmer of hope amidst the ongoing flood crisis that has plagued their community, thanks to the proactive efforts of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA).

In a bid to mitigate the devastating effects of flooding, UNRA has commenced a ground-breaking initiative to install water channels in the area.

The recent flooding, which submerged homes and disrupted daily life in Lukaya Town Council, particularly affecting areas such as Kulumba estate, Juma cell, Lutente, Kawanda, central ward and Kkulubya cell, has spurred UNRA into action.

Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, the National Roads Authority swiftly launched a campaign to dig ditches, signalling a promising step towards alleviating the flood menace.

Residents have voiced their support and urged continued efforts to safeguard against future floods.

Mr Francis Katabaazi, the Kalungu East MP, lauded the roads authority of its commitment to finding sustainable solutions to alleviate flooding in Kalungu.

"The drilling campaign aims to identify underlying causes of flooding and implement appropriate measures to mitigate its impact," he stated.

Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja a former area member of parliament, emphasized the significance of the ongoing construction of water tunnels, highlighting their pivotal role in redirecting excess water away from residential areas.

Additionally, Ssempijja underscored the importance of environmental stewardship, urging residents to actively participate in preserving the natural landscape and reducing plastic pollution, which exacerbates flooding.

Kalungu, renowned for its agricultural productivity and vibrant markets, has been plagued by flooding during the rainy seasons, disrupting livelihoods and posing significant risks to infrastructure.

Furthermore, local leaders have expressed gratitude for the timely intervention by UNRA, emphasising the importance of collaboration in addressing community challenges.

The flood crisis, which originated at Kamuwunga primary school earlier this month, has galvanized collaborative efforts between government agencies and the local community to address this pressing issue.

As UNRA continues to forge ahead with its water connection project, there is renewed hope for a brighter, flood-resilient future for the residents of Lukaya Town Council.
