The composer of Makerere University's anthem, Grace Wilson Igaga Mutekanga, has passed away at the age of 81.

He had been battling cancer since the early 2000s.

His death was announced by Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, who shared that Mutekanga died at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Mulago.

Mutekanga was renowned not only for his musical contributions but also for his pioneering role in education.

He was the first head teacher of Kamuli College, which later became Namasagali College, and his legacy extends to his time at Makerere College School, where he studied alongside notable figures such as Dr. James Makumbi and the late Kibirige Ssebunya.

In August 2013, his contribution to the university was formally recognized when the then Vice Chancellor, Professor Mondo Kagonyera, honored him for composing the Makerere University anthem.

Mutekanga was also affectionately known as "Proud to be a Musoga."

During the 90th Anniversary celebrations of Makerere University on August 3, 2013, Mutekanga received a standing ovation from the congregation as he was presented with his award by Chancellor Professor George Mondo Kagonyera.

He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Frances Mutekanga, and other family members.

The Chancellor praised Mutekanga’s composition, stating, “As we celebrate 90 years of Makerere University, I take this singular honor of recognizing the composer of one of the most beautiful anthems I have ever listened to.”

The composer thrilled the audience by singing a stanza of the anthem with the finesse and articulation only the original composer could muster, receiving thunderous applause in return.

In his acceptance speech, Mutekanga expressed his gratitude: “With great humility, I stand before you to thank you, Mr. Vice Chancellor, and your administration for every effort. I thank the Makerere University community for accepting my contribution. I say to the entire world, I feel honored. I never imagined I would receive this honor while I am still alive. I am very grateful for the award.”
