A joint security team has launched investigations into a deadly explosion at Triangle Zone in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District, that left two welders dead and another injured.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 1pm and involved an unidentified metal structure that exploded while being worked on.
The victims have been identified as Ayub Mpanda and Emmanuel Tumwebaze, who owned the metal in question.
The injured, David Mugogo, is currently receiving treatment at Njeru Medical Centre.
Eyewitness accounts reveal the explosion happened as the victims attempted to modify the metal. “I was at work going about my business when I heard a huge blast,” said Stephen Kuboi, Chairman of Nile Market.
“When I rushed to the scene, we found two people dead and one injured.”
The explosion prompted an immediate response from security agencies, including the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), police, and counter-terrorism units, who swiftly cordoned off the area.
Hellen Butoto, the Police spokesperson for Ssezibwa Region, confirmed that a bomb squad arrived from Kampala at 5:30 PM to begin forensic investigations.
“The investigation is ongoing to establish the nature of the explosion and how it occurred,” Butoto said.
The bodies of Mpanda and Tumwebaze have been transported to Jinja Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examinations, while Mugogo remains under medical care.
Authorities are now urging caution among scrap dealers and welders, emphasizing the need for vigilance when handling unidentified or suspicious materials.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Triangle Zone community, highlighting the potential risks posed by mishandling hazardous materials.
Further updates on the investigation are expected as authorities work to determine the cause of the explosion and ensure public safety.
