Makerere University Business School (MUBS) has unveiled groundbreaking initiatives aimed at fostering women’s empowerment, technical innovation, and sustainable development.

MUBS Principal Professor Moses Muhwezi made the announcements during Makerere University’s 75th graduation ceremony, which celebrates 13,658 students earning degrees and diplomas.

Highlighting efforts to uplift women entrepreneurs, MUBS is implementing the World Bank-funded Generating Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women Enterprises (GROW) project in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development.

The initiative targets 20,000 women, including 3,000 from refugee-hosting districts and 900 refugee women, offering essential business skills training.

“The GROW project is a testament to our commitment to driving inclusive development by equipping women with the tools they need to thrive,” said Professor Muhwezi. “Through this, we aim to transform communities and create resilient economies.”

Through its Entrepreneurship Incubation and Innovation Centre, MUBS has also supported 300 startups, with 41 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) securing collective funding of $ 870,000 an equivalent of 3.2 billion Uganda shillings in collaboration with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

Additionally, the Faculty of Tourism, Hospitality, and Languages received a €750,000 grant an equivalent of 2.8 billion Uganda shillings for a project titled "Beyond the Souvenir," focused on fostering sustainable education in hospitality.

This faculty has also gained international recognition by hosting 350 participants from 27 countries for the 11th Congress, in partnership with the French Embassy and the Association of Teachers of French in Uganda.

MUBS also showcased its commitment to technical and vocational education through its partnership with TME Education under the Ministry of Education and Sports.

This collaboration introduces Internet of Things (IoT) and embedded systems training for staff and students, ensuring graduates possess cutting-edge technical skills.

“Our partnership with TME Education bridges the gap between traditional curricula and the demands of modern industry,” Professor Muhwezi added.

In line with its sustainability goals, MUBS has launched the Green Energy Research Unit (GERU) to advance renewable energy technologies.

The unit operates under a two-year project titled “Solar-biogas hybrid energy system for energy transformation” and seeks to foster innovative research among students and faculty for efficient energy use.

This highlights MUBS’s role as a hub for innovation, collaboration, and empowerment, driving both Uganda’s education system and economic development to greater heights.
