Akena Demands Extension of Voter Registration Deadline

Akena warned that the current timeline risks disenfranchising many eligible voters, especially young citizens who will turn 18 after the deadline, thereby undermining inclusivity in the democratic process.
Uganda People's Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Akena has called on the Electoral Commission to extend the voter registration deadline, set to close on February 10, 2025.
Akena warned that the current timeline risks disenfranchising many eligible voters, especially young citizens who will turn 18 after the deadline, thereby undermining inclusivity in the democratic process.
Speaking at a press briefing in Kampala, Akena emphasized the need for an extended registration period to ensure that all eligible voters are included.
“We cannot claim to have free and fair elections when a significant portion of our youth is left out due to this deadline. The Electoral Commission must prioritize inclusivity over convenience,” Akena said.
The UPC leader announced that the party would explore all available avenues to advocate for the extension.
He urged the Electoral Commission to reconsider its decision, cautioning that failing to do so could erode public confidence in Uganda’s electoral process.
During the briefing, Akena also confirmed his intention to run for the presidency in the 2026 general elections.
After serving two decades as a Member of Parliament representing Lira Municipality and later Lira East Division in Lira City, Akena signaled a new phase in his political career.
“I am committed to offering Ugandans leadership that values unity, equity, and progress,” Akena declared.
The UPC is actively engaged in grassroots mobilization and strategic planning as part of its preparations for the upcoming elections.
Akena expressed confidence in the party’s ability to secure more parliamentary seats, citing growing public support for the UPC’s agenda.
Akena revealed that the party is focused on strengthening its structures nationwide. He highlighted the UPC’s efforts to build a robust team capable of championing the interests of Ugandans both in Parliament and beyond.
“We are not just preparing for the presidency; we are building a team that will champion the interests of Ugandans at all levels,” Akena remarked.
As the debate over the voter registration deadline continues, Akena’s push for an extension underscores the importance of inclusivity and fairness in Uganda’s electoral process.
His stance highlights a broader call for democratic integrity, which remains vital to the country’s political future.
