The commission asked for over shs1.3 trillion to organize the 2026 elections but they have missed out on some activities because the government delayed to release funds.
"We are in the process of revising the road map because we were unable to do some preliminary activities on account of lack of funds," said justice Byabakama.
Underfunding and delayed release of funds continues to be electoral commissions cry nearly each election year.
The 2026 road map has not been spared of the effects of lack of funds. The commission is now set to revise it's road map after some activities were not conducted as government could not avail them funds
"Now that we have been assured of the finances in this financial year, then we shall incorporate the missed activities within the available funds," said Byabakama
Some of the affected activities include, procurement of materials and services for demarcation of election areas fixed for April 2023, reorganization of poling stations scheduled for April 2023, recruitment and training of parish and sub county supervisors for purposes of reorganizing polling stations scheduled for May 2024, regional stakeholders engagements on roadmap, demarcation of election areas and reorganizing polling stations scheduled June 2024 as well as field demarcation of constituencies and election areas scheduled to start with July 2024 among others.
The commission released its road map last year in August, with a budget estimate of shs1.3 trillion
The commission resorted to a phased approach of funding with finances expected between 2023 to 2026 while the roadmap was developed to guide timely implementation of activities.
